Most often deciding to implement a new technology can be stressful but when it is successful, the benefits are worth all the pain of getting it off the ground. A typical challenge can be actually determining which pain to address first within an organization. There can be several different departments and teams that all work together but have very different wants and needs when it comes to prioritizing new technology. It is very difficult to make a decision based solely on one team’s specific needs or one department’s needs. It is important to be specific with the criteria because often a lot of technologies can do everything you want with a big sticker price, but you may only need a few features, so be careful not to buy into an entire package. Keep doing your research to find the companies that do the one or two things you really need, and do them really well.
First and foremost, you as the customer, need to have your expectations laid out before talking to a sales person, because the last thing anyone needs is to be sold something that doesn’t add value. For example, you should have a clear understanding of your company’s budget for new technology, what onboarding, training or customer support looks like (and is that an extra fee), is it a subscription or license agreement and what does the term look like, just to mention a few. It could be helpful to consult with the right people and prioritize a list of things before getting on the phone or seeing a demo. A lot of technology companies, especially startups, are constantly innovating and changing. So, it is always nice to ask if there is a product roadmap to get an understanding of some new and exciting things that are coming down the pipeline over the next few months or years.
Remember, choosing a new technology isn’t just about the technology, it can be equally valuable to research the company, the team and understand their values and goals. Another thing to remember is that you are creating a partnership in some respect, they want to help you grow your business and improve what you are doing, and the company also appreciates you as the customers and how you can support them as well.
